Lately, many of our cities in America have been moving very quickly in the wrong direction. To be healthy, our cities must provide diverse habitats for a diverse population, not just those with high-paying jobs. What happens when humanity destroys the habitat of a keystone species in an ecosystem? Ecological collapse. If the price of housing in a city rises so much that a majority of its teachers can't afford to live within it but must make long daily commutes from the suburbs, how does that affect the city's school system? You can ask the same question for police officers, fire fighters, municipal government employees, custodial service workers, community organization employees, small business workers, and all the other people that, while still fulfilling roles vital to society, might not get paid as much as the the people working for the major tech, engineering, and financial services companies that fill the city's skyscrapers and office towers.Ī city is a massive collection of interconnected economic and social systems, highly analogous to ecosystems found in nature, that require balance for health. The part quoted above makes a particularly important point about the complementarity of skills within a professionally diverse population. I read this essay this week, and it really got me thinking about the far-reaching ripple effects of unaffordable housing. This happens in people’s private lives too: people often spend hours trying to fix their leaky pipes instead of just calling in a plumber, because the prices of plumbers near them have risen to cover the costs for plumbers to live there." As a result, many businesses end up leaving highly skilled staff without assistance, spending their time on work that could be done by others, lowering the time they can spend on the tasks they’re best at. ![]() "That means people who do get to live in these high-productivity places are less productive than they could be, because they are less able to combine their skills with the complementary skills of the people who have been priced out. I certainly hope the design issues 432 Park Avenue has can be resolved, otherwise it will become nothing more than a monument to how poor QA/QC can turn any ambitious project into a gigantic waste of time and resources. Now the foremost reason the tower was built, to sell multimillion dollar condos to ultrawealthy buyers for profit, is seemingly defeated by shoddy construction work rendering it unpleasant to live in. But the technology that enabled this tower to be built is still nascent, and as the residents in this article indicate, that can come with challenges that tend to scale with the magnitude of the project. From its uppermost apartments, nearly all of New York's urban core can be seen, all the way to Yonkers and past Staten Island. It stands as a monument to both technological innovations and its occupants' immense wealth. 432 Park Avenue has become a new landmark in New York, not for an iconic and nearly universally recognized design-like the Chrysler Building has-but for its extreme slenderness. ![]() ![]() In the case of monotypes, the plate is a featureless plate. Both involve the transfer of ink from a plate to the paper, canvas, or other surface that will ultimately hold the work of art. More recently, however, they have come to refer to two different, though similar, types of printmaking. Historically, the terms monotype and monoprint were often used interchangeably. Twenty-first century examples include works by Nicole Eisenman, Christopher Wool, Karen LaMonte, April Flanders, and Scott Swezy. In the twentieth century the technique became more popular examples include the extraordinary colorful monotypes created by Marc Chagall in the 1960s. Paul Gauguin used a variant technique involving tracing, later taken up by Paul Klee. Few other artists used the technique until Degas, who made several, often working on them further after printing ( Beside the Sea, 1876-7) Pissarro also made several. Each impression was usually then worked over by hand, using ink and watercolour. William Blake developed a different technique, painting on millboard in egg tempera to produce both new works and coloured impressions of his prints and book illustrations, including his Pity. Visions of the Daughters of Albion, a combination by Blake of relief etching for the lines and monotype for the colour Sallaert clearly appreciated in the monotype technique the freedom to design on a plate before printing it on paper. He often added by hand white highlights to his monotypes. ![]() His monotypes and drawings are characterised by swelling lines and tapering ends. Sallaert found in the monotype a technique which was the closest to drawing and oil sketching. It is likely that Sallaert's monotype style was influenced by the chiaroscuro woodcuts of the Dutch engraver Hendrik Goltzius. Sallaert, on the other hand, brushed bold, tapering lines onto the printing surface with meticulous precision. Castiglione created most of his monotypes as black-field images by wiping away ink on a prepared plate thus producing white and grey lines. Both artists used the new technique in different ways. It is believed that the Flemish artist Antoon Sallaert created his first monotypes in the early 1640s and is therefore to be regarded as the inventor of this printing process. He began to make monotypes in the mid 1640s, normally working from black to white, and produced over twenty surviving ones, over half of which are set at night. He made brushed sketches intended as finished and final works of art. The Italian artist Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609–64) is often credited as being the first artist to produce monotypes. There is still no certainty as to who was the inventor of the monotype process. Monotype by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, probably a second impression Monotypes can be spontaneously executed and with no previous sketch. Stencils, watercolor, solvents, brushes, and other tools are often used to embellish a monotype print. ![]() These prints from the original plate are called "ghost prints." A print made by pressing a new print onto another surface, effectively making the print into a plate, is called a "cognate". Although subsequent reprintings are sometimes possible, they differ greatly from the first print and are generally considered inferior. Monotyping produces a unique print, or monotype most of the ink is removed during the initial pressing. With oil-based inks, the paper may be dry, in which case the image has more contrast, or the paper may be damp, in which case the image has a 10 percent greater range of tones. creating lights from a field of opaque colour. ![]() ![]() Monotypes can also be created by inking an entire surface and then, using brushes or rags, removing ink to create a subtractive image, e.g. The image is then transferred onto a paper by pressing the two together, using a printing-press, brayer, baren or by techniques such as rubbing with the back of a wooden spoon or the fingers which allow pressure to be controlled selectively. The surface, or matrix, was historically a copper etching plate, but in contemporary work it can vary from zinc or glass to acrylic glass. Lastly and what this article is really written for is how you can accomplish remote desktop use for macOS from Linux. If that fails to work then Sharpkeys can remap your keys for sure & if you want to continue to use Kinto locally then you can change its keyboard type to Apple for proper keymaps during normal usage. Also the very simple modifier key remap built-in to macOS is completely useless during remote desktop use or VNC solutions, even the one built-in.įor Windows the solution is likely pretty simple - you can likely use Autohotkey or modify kinto.sh to remap your keys during a specific remote application having focus. Every remote desktop application I came across also seemed to lack the ability to remap your keys as well, commercial or not. What about the key mapping though? If your keyboard is not already laid out like that of a macbook then you may be in for a bit of a surprise when your keys no longer line up properly for macOS. Ok, so that quickly gets to how, or what to use rather, to remote into macOS or Linux even (combine xRDP w/ NoMachine and it becomes even more flexible for screen sizes that can literally change and scale perfectly on a whim). ![]() That’s an ok deal - but lately I have found a cross-platform application that is free for personal use and has identical, if not better performance even, NoMachine. Of course if you want to purchase a license for iRAPP, or what is now Nuords RDP server, for macOS then you can have much better performance at a cost of about $50 a year. ![]() Until recently I had not tried this and for a few reasons, the built-in screen-sharing of macOS via VNC has always been a subpar experience for me compared to something as sophisticated as RDP. So I am the author of kinto.sh and one of the things that I have ensured users of my app is the ability to remotely access Linux or Windows with their macOS based keybinds intact - but what about going back to macOS from Linux or Windows while using a non-Apple keyboard? ![]() ![]() ![]() This helps protect your identity online and lets you bypass geoblocks. While a VPN does not provide 100% anonymity, it does switch your IP address. Communicating over this private network helps you isolate your online activities and avoid interception. In other words, it creates a private network within the larger world wide web. This action is called tunneling, which hides your traffic from interceptors such as your ISP or the government. What is a VPN?Ī VPN or virtual private network is a software that encrypts your traffic and routes it through a random server. It’s a direct competitor to mainstream browsers like Google Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Firefox. Today, when we talk about Tor, we mean the browser. ![]() Tor Browser was launched in 2008 and has been synonymous with Tor since then. Your connection is automatically routed through the Tor network, thus hiding your IP address and traffic. You can use the browser to surf the web privately. Tor Browser is the project’s flagship product. Because of its multi-layered encryption, Tor is wrongly considered a free VPN. No, Tor is not a VPN but it works like one and has similar operations and applications. Criminals may still use sophisticated methods to hack the Tor network for traffic surveillance. While Tor has its shortcomings, you should know that its main aim is to prevent traffic analysis. Your traffic is encrypted over and over again, thus mimicking the construction of the vegetable. This decentralized network is called onion routing because of its multi-layered infrastructure. Neither can they see or analyze the content of the traffic. Anyone who might want to track you cannot link back the activities to you. Such a decentralized network tunnels and encrypts your traffic, detaching you from your web activities. When you use Tor, your web traffic moves through these independent nodes. Tor works using relays (or nodes) managed by volunteers spread across the globe. Officially known as the Tor Project, it utilizes the onion routing technology to encrypt and conceal your traffic. Tor is a free and open-source software founded in 2002 designed to help browse the web anonymously. Let’s settle the Tor versus VPN debate once and for all. And that is what this short guide is about. Of course, there are a lot of moving parts in this comparison. You should ideally choose the one that fits your needs and budget. Tor is free, independent, and open-source, whereas a VPN is a commercial software. While a VPN uses a proprietary server to mask your IP address, Tor uses a decentralized relay network (called onion router). The main difference between a VPN and Tor is how they hide your traffic. ![]() Since the underlying tech is similar, we must consider their differences carefully. ![]() ![]() With Syncios Software, you can create playlist, delete songs, play music directly from your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android without iTunes. Every developer would have the burden of testing changes for four different operating systems. There are several reasons we do not want a single repository to support all operating systems: Every implementation would port changes from this central repository instead of searching the commit history of the other implementations. Developers from any implementation could then easily install and test platform-independent changes in that central repository.
